Jean-Jacques Sempé (cover artist)
Andrew P. Kner (art director)
French cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé (born 1932), known as Sempé, enjoyed a large American audience, partly owing to his frequent work in The New Yorker magazine. He was the featured artist in this issue, with the piece focusing on his rather gentle but acerbic depictions of the Comédie humaine, which were decidedly French in idiom but universal in conception. His interest in social contradiction was evident in this cover.
